Columbus was a con artist. He started out on a trip not knowing where he was going, when he got there, he didn't know where he was at, when he returned, he didn't know where he had been; and he did it all on money her borrowed from a woman.

Gets worse, he was just after gold or wealth to essentially fund an army to do his religious crusade, as in yeah, do another crusade type thing etc. He was by all accounts a great, even brilliant navigator, which is worse that he used that skill for this aim.
