So Lula not only won, he basically doubled his margin of victory from 2022. I'm guessing he won thanks to voters who didn't love him, but were terrified to see Flavio given near-dictatorial power. It's going to be a messy next chapter for Brazil, but at least it'll be a fight, not a curb-stomping.

A reminder that every progression made to create a fairer society has always been achieved through a fight by organised ordinary people against a hostile and resistant wealthy elite.

Last I'll post about this, but Elon Musk disagrees with me. This means I am onto something, and I feel more valid in my opinion than ever.

I'm old enough to remember when Pauline Hanson was so offended at being lampooned by drag artist 'Pauline Pantsdown' that she took her application for an injunction against PP all the way to the High Court. Seems the admonishment to 'have a laugh' only goes one way.

One thing most people don’t know about disability is how unsafe you feel ALL the time. It’s terrifying not being able to trust your body to function properly. It’s scary to need to rely on others for basic survival. It’s frightening watching society label you expendable.

Shoutout to all the journalists who put in a ton of time and effort gathering documents and working sources only to have someone else rewrite their story months later and present it as new reporting

Also a huge lesson I've learned: even if you can't convince the person you're talking to - maybe you can if you're El-Sayed lol - even if you can't, there's almost always other people in the room who are listening. It pays to make your case to them.

A thread on the AIF in Myanmar which will be very useful to many folks here who haven't been Aware of their existence.

1. This (recent) History Thread is about the Anti-Fascist Internationalist Front in Myanmar, founded Oct. 15, 2024 by foreign volunteers who joined Myanmar's anti-coup revolution. Women Internationalists of the Chin Hills is an AIF-associated group. #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar

This is a really good explainer about the mortality estimates around USAID. One big point is that dismantling USAID also dismantled one of the main sources of mortality data in some of these regions. Early indicators of mortality are very worrying.

Violence against women AND girls isn’t an issue just in America. This is a GLOBAL issue. A very prominent one. If we don’t include our sisters in this worldwide we dismiss what is happening to them.

Attn ‘yet to maybe’ voters of the US. I don’t know you. I don’t blame you. All I know is your president is inspiring losers in my country. So given I can not vote in yours can you please push past the whatever is stopping you and vote for me? Or go help someone else vote and do something+ at least.

Hey does anyone know if the person who stood up with the Primus shirt wants to meet the band? Can we make that happen? I know nothing other than the SP theme song and that woman’s bravery deserves a special one off concert or private or intimate small show even, if it’s her band, and she wants that?

In 3 months, 3 years, or 3 whatevers, there is more chance you will be bin diving for food rather than fine dining at the restaurant that only cost you every standard you lowered or passed by.

This is all disgusting. I've had people accuse me of using AI when I do shit like use an em-dash. I struggle to avoid yelling but HUNDREDS OF ARTICLES AND AT LEAST TWO BOOKS I WROTE have been scraped by OpenAI. I'm part of why your chatbots write the way they do. They're copying me.

Two debating styles: 1. El-Sayed. Acts like a skilled boxer as he throws jabs early and often at his opponent until they are weakened and then opens it up. 2. Ossoff. Pulls the sink from the green room in the back and starts beating his opponent with it right away. Does not stop until its over.

I am so deeply annoyed at the half hour I spent reading about the AI pain study. Also annoyed that writing about AI seems to more frequently contain writing I very much suspect was generated or edited by AI than other writing. Anyway, here's what that was:

Evan Urquhart@evanurquhart.bsky.social

Am I understanding correctly that the researchers "steered" an AI to talk about pain, then found it talked about pain in ways that resemble a human experiencing pain combined with a bit of sci fi machine consciousness woo?

Too many people judge the disabled for what we do to survive. The truth is you can’t fathom what it’s like to live in a body that’s betrayed you. To exist in legislated poverty with no reliable help or care. To be left by the wayside to die and abandoned by almost everyone. 🧵
