Most larger libraries keep statistics on how much of the populace has cards, how many checkouts, visits, program attendance, etc and those are very much used to decide library budgets and support. Very few people contact their local library board or equivalent. Your voice is VERY LOUD there.

How to support the library (for free!): 1) Have a library card and use it. 2) Go to the library in person. Check out books. 3) Attend programs. 4) Find out who has budget control over your local library (usually a library board or county commissioners). Tell them how you feel about the library.

Ooof. I already have a book out that I forgot to renew. But I have an excuse! I was all involved in GOTV stuff and that's also the reason I haven't had time to read it so I do need to renew it because I need/want to read it. And wow, the renewal guilt!

I preach every day I work. I take pictures and post every day I don't work. There are so many amazing free things in the Kingdom of Knowledge. I love my job. I have an underground delivery service in our rural area. I bring card applications to folks and bring back a card!

Speaking as a trustee of my public library, I can say that one of the biggest ways you can help your public library is the easiest - to use it. Whether that be in-person, through an app like Libby for audio and ebooks, all those checkouts help drum up numbers.

On top of that, always get out to vote and support others to do the same, on propositions for library budgets in your area. In many areas, these are often back of the ballot items during school budget votes, and can easily be forgotten if people don't flip the ballot over.

And of course, if you really want to get hands-on, volunteer! Libraries can always use help with programs, shelving, and all the many other things that have to go on throughout every day of providing service. If you're feeling particularly saucy, run for a board/trustee spot.

Friends of the Library groups raise money for local libraries. And here's some thoughts from a librarian: bsky.app/profile/trul...

Take it from a librarian, the smallest things count! Website traffic, social media likes, newsletter sign-ups - this is vital data, evidence we use to prove that we are needed. And of course, every item you borrow, every resource you use, every program you drop in on ACTIVELY helps us.
