Thanks for sharing this document, @rweingarten.bsky.social. I read it, and I believe it's inexcusably inadequate and will not prepare teachers or schools to confront the very real dangers of the "A.i." products pushed by your partners, including OpenAI. A few thoughts for your consideration...

I can't read all that rn but here's what *middle school kids* are doing w AI at school on their own time so I'd suggest a whole lot of educational policy, resources and advocacy be directed at the dynamics responsible for this complete $hit$how abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory...

I mean, this was my response when I heard Weingarten was going on about how "fascists fear teachers"…

Jake Wright@bcnjake.bsky.social

Can you ask Randi Weingarten why, if fascists actually fear teachers, AFT is collaborating to bring fascist technology to every corner of education with their AI collaborations?

The document does not mention the suicides and deaths associated with "A.i." products produced by your partners. It does not address the cognitive decline associated with these "A.i." products. It does not address the fact that Trump is pushing these companies to make these LLMs more right wing.

The document does not address the fact that right wing billionaires control these products and, as Musk has proven, can use them to literally push Nazi propaganda.

At various points, the document gives lip service to the need to educate students about the possibility of disinformation or other harms. But it puts all of the responsibility for this on teachers, not on the billionaires pushing this miserable tech. This is an anti-teacher document, in my opinion.

Some specific points: The document says "When appropriate, educators and school systems can use technology to create and grade assessments, saving time and allowing immediate feedback." No. No one wants to be or deserves to be graded by "A.i."

I went to a panel presentation on AI use in schools at a school boards conference earlier this month and one of the panelists claimed that AI is completely safe. He also said that the kid that committed suicide probably would have done it anyway, it wasn’t the AI’s fault. I was steaming mad.

Teacher here: Teachers absolutely DO NOT need AI to make their jobs easier. We need good high-quality curriculum (costs money) We need resources and supplies (costs money) We need smaller class sizes (costs money) We don't need AI slop substituting for any of that.

I teach HS science and there is literally NOTHING that AI can do that will improve my job. I mean, sure, I can have AI write powerpoints and emails to parents. But they will be garbage. Actual labs and lessons need to be field-tested and refined. It is an iterative process.

Somebody on reddit wants to make a "reading passges for new adult readers" where AI will let them learn about ANYTHING THEY WANT!!!! for adult ed folks teaching low level readers. I called them on basically saying "well, it won't be great but it'll be good enough."

Also, 90% of effective teaching at the non-elite (AP, IB) level is figuring out how to engage and motivate students. And that is something you have to do student-by-student. They are all different and have different needs, interests, learning styles, and motivations. There is no one magic bullet.

Tech bros mostly wanted to geek out with computers all day in school. And so they design curriculum for their 16 year old selves. But they are, by definition, fringe outliers. And most kids are ill-served by an online curriculum designed for a 16 year old Gates or Zuck. COVID told us that.
