@gregpak.net Sad to see your Firefly end up on the banned book list for schools in Alberta.

There are significant odds that they just asked ChatGPT or Claude to compile a list, and never checked anything. So I wouldn't wonder too much.

Confused with Piers Anthony's unrelated and pedophillia-heavy novel of the same name? Not that book banners deserve the benefit of the doubt.

“This isn’t censorship,” his statement said. “It’s a common‑sense standard to keep explicit sexual images out of school libraries, and we delivered exactly that.” lol there's no explicit sex in those FIREFLY books. guessing they just targeted comics, period.

Do not try to figure out the logic behind the UCP’s most recent attempt at book banning. Every round has been a little more incoherent, and I expect they’ll just keep on until they manage to ban Winnie the Pooh because nobody’s wearing pants.

I mean, this was a mainstream direct market monthly comic based on a 2002 Fox TV show? There's not even any nudity?

Also unclear which books they're mad at. We did multiple arcs with multiple volumes, so "Firefly Vol 1" and "Firefly Vol 2" could refer to several different story arcs. (Welcome to comics, censors! Correct titles are important!) I mean, none of them had "graphic sexual imagery." 🤷

Things they could be mad about: 1. Inara is a sex worker. Not really a focus of these stories, but hey. 2. We introduced an Asian character named Boss Moon who's bisexual and talks about her femme ex at one point. 3. The characters are anti-authoritarian outlaws?

It’s been an ongoing issue that educators are furious about. There’s a very MAGA-esque faction that keeps the current Premier in power, and she is going for their every whim (banning trans kids in sport, no sex education, Moms For Liberty style book bans, invoking the Notwithstanding Clause to

Pretty sure the argument will be "Comic contains a setting called Earth-That-Was, which implies that the wonderful capitalist United States might fail at some point, which will make children ask their parents uncomfortable questions. BANISHED TO THE SHADOW REALM."

Alberta is the most embarrassing province. They’re targeting so many queer books or books focused on BlPoc stories, then they turn around and tell us that they’re not targeting minorities. Oh and they’re looking into extending the bans to public libraries now, not just school libraries. Hate it.
