On Fri night, Brooklyn court staff forced a woman to give birth inside the courtroom. Per public defenders, she gave birth in handcuffs, unable to reposition herself, unable to pick up her infant. The men who’d shackled her looked on. The judge lauded the birth of a ‘beautiful baby’ on the record.

Speakers talked not just about the woman forced to give birth in a courtroom, but other people who have died in custody.

A speaker said the woman who was forced to give birth in the courtroom was picked up for trespassing -- on her own roof. Other speakers talked about people being picked up for jumping subway turnstiles.

Nice touch - because this event was organized by the Association of Legal Advocates and Attorneys, some of the signs were written on legal-sized file folders.

Impressive work by ALAA UAW 2325 getting so many passionate people to this demo on such short notice. Their chant game was impressive, too - some pretty wordy call and response (as might befit the legal profession), pulled off nicely!

The deep commitment of the protesters and speakers came through. These are lawyers and legal aid professionals who are desperately trying to protect their clients. Much respect.
