When I was at Launch Pad, three among our small group of 7 were New Yorkers and one of the things we talked about away from the classroom most was AI and its harmful effects on students. I shared this video with them.

Do you really think abstinence-only AI education is a good idea? Privileged students will be taught to effectively and safely use LLM tools - outside of school, if necessary - but poor kids' only real hope for that is in school.

So a 2-yr NYC school AI moratorium would leave poor kids competitively 2 yrs behind their AI-competent peers at the next level of education or workplace. As a former dirt poor kid who only had access to computers at school in the 90's, I was so grateful for that access once I got to college.

I was already so far behind virtually all of my peers in so many different ways at my highly selective university. Having to catch up on 2 years of missed basic computer training would have been devastating for me and just impossible to overcome for many others from my socio-economic background.

Visit HeyMamdani.fyi and tell the mayor you want a full 2 year moratorium for NYC schools! Not JUST for 2K-8 and not JUST for students - a FULL moratorium for 2K-12 and students AND teachers! These "A.i." tools are NOT fit for schools. We gotta buy some time to figure this out!
