Just saw Wildwood. One of the most heartbreakingly beautiful movies I’ve seen in years. The story would shine on its own, but in combination with the breathtaking hand animation it is truly a masterpiece.

Google was really trying to hide its water use figures, to the degree that it got the council to try to keep its water use figures secret. The community finally got the actual numbers and found out Google was using 29 percent of the water in the community. www.wired.com/story/what-t...

I saw Wildwood yesterday and so agree! The story alone was plenty, but with the monumental achievement of the animation, it deserves all the eyeballs. Heartfelt, human storytelling. Don’t miss it.

I promise I am not trying to be hyperbolic and this is my genuine reaction having just got out: That is the best film of 2026, the single most technically beautiful and artistically inspiring film I've ever seen, and one of the best fantasy stories in any medium. My god, what an achievement

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg

As a geologist, the flooded caverns and caves of the Yucatan are most spectacular. What felt surprisingly touching though were glimpses into the Mayan underworld of artifacts left behind when the caves were dry. Some close to an entrance, some surprisingly deep inside. #InternationalArchaeologyDay

I normally don’t quote tweet, and please don’t dunk on this person, but I want to point this out: There is no debate around the complex material realities of biological sex. There is POLITICAL disagreement about if or how biology should be used. So let’s go down that rabbit hole, quickly… 🧵

And since I said it somewhere else, I’ll say it here: I want a future where the government doesn’t have a right to measure my hormones or chromosomes, and where I can access meaningful healthcare, where my health information remains private, is influenced by best practices and not politics…

… and where I can access public restrooms when I need them, without thinking twice about my plans, or if I’ll be safe or arrested. Seems pretty sensible to me. [end 🧵]

Pick any quality of biological sex, and try to use it to define citizen rights, and you’re going to hit these same road blocks. Complexities are a biological reality. There is no single definition that will fit everyone…

That is why I support policies that allow for flexibility, privacy, & expert guidance, and am against blanket government mandates on “who gets to be what,” which ignore material reality, and violate individual rights to privacy. For more on the complexities, read here: bsky.app/profile/rebe...

Even then, there will be complexity. Chromosomes don’t always match other traits. But fine. Is this X/Y hill is the one you’re going to die on: Give the government access to our genetic info. That’s not what *I* want. But that’s the logical conclusion of the X/Y debate…

If you say eggs or sperm are the be all end all of sex, then what does that look like socially? Does that look like mandatory fertility testing? Does it look like government records around those tests? Seems pretty dystopian to me...

First, let’s be transparent: this debate is not happening in a biology classroom for the sake of understanding biology. We cannot pretend this is purely a scientific argument. There are political and social motivations for discussing this issue NOW. This is a political and social argument…

So, given that, how do we understand these arguments in that context? Let’s look at Chromosomes. There are people who say biological sex is evident in chromosomes and thus can’t be debated. How do we use this argument socially? Should chromosomes be recorded at birth? Is that what you want?…

At #IWC70 in Hobart, OceanCare brought the welfare of whales to the INTERNATIONAL WHALING COMMISSION. We are deeply concerned about the methods used to kill whales. There is no humane way to kill a whale at sea. But whaling is not only a conservation matter. It is an animal welfare issue. ⚠️ 🐋

Blue button jellies float on the waters surface. They’re related to true jellies, but they’ve got a dry top that feels a bit like a fingernail, and is filled with air-trapping chambers to keep the jelly above the waves This float also means they slide on the water like hockey pucks 🏒
