At this "A.i." hearing at the NYC City Hall and so far it's all goofy talk about Skynet/Terminator "A.i." superintelligence scenarios and nothing about actual massive current harms of regular schmegular trash "A.i."

Every discussion about the tech has been intentionally frontloaded with generations of fiction, and so for people who know nothing about the tech, the arguments they hear or participate in are about fictional concepts instead of anything genuine, which all the grifters benefit from.

The Meta rep is doing a little ad for Muse while saying "super intelligence" instead of "artificial intelligence." Deeply unserious.

None of the "A.i." companies sent anyone to testify in person. They're all on video. Disrespectful and unserious.

This hearing thus far is a waste that helps the companies. They WANT to talk about bullshit AGI sci fi scenarios - they DON'T want to talk about current harms from their slop tech like theft from creators, cognitive decline, fraud, environmental damage, disinfo, and links to murder and suicide.

Menin is getting little soundbite zingers where the companies are dodging the request to quantify catastrophic risk. But it feels like a song and dance to avoid real questions about real current harm.

With respect, we don't need to talk about Terminator. We need to talk about trash AI that's already running NYC. hiring algorithms that are still discriminatory black boxes with fake audits. Landlord screening AI that auto-rejects Black and brown tenants over bad data

the way certain politicians reacted about solar energy taking away from the coal industry, really tells us everything about how they actually don’t care if technology is destroying and dismantling actual real jobs in the creative fields. (Which is a lot larger than coal)
