No snark. This is Trump at his best. No other politician in modern history could zig-zag from “This guy’s a communist and I’d even support Cuomo over him” to “I think he has a chance to do a great job” 2 weeks later, and seem like he completely meant both of them.

Trump loves attaching himself to a Winner. He gets to pretend he saw it first, and his base will believe him, because they are a cult. The question is how much will having (the appearance of) trumps support detail the mayor elect.

There is no Trump at his best. He has only one imperative here: how to make himself look good (in comparison) and his two mode are either 1. Make the other person look bad by belittling/ridiculing/acosting him/her or 2. „Basking in the other‘s glory“. He chose the second option. Cont‘d…

Also, in some alternate universe, Trump did become NYC mayor and maybe actually did/is doing a pretty good job in the role, never having made a turn to the right on social issues.

What do you mean by “social issues”. What about all the non-social issues? What about the authoritarian tendencies? That’s him at his core.

What few people understand—and those who do avoid mentioning—is that the mayor of NYC has remarkably little power compared with most mayors. There is enough power for corruption, so Trump may have been Adams++, but most of the job is optics.

Never made a turn to the right? Brother, he took out a full page ad in the times calling for the death penalty for the Central Park Five in 1989! Teenagers that were wrongly convicted. He’s always been a right wing grifter even if his cult of personality can impress you sometimes.

I’m not saying Trump (and his father before him) weren’t virulent racists. I’m saying that in a hypothetical world where Trump got elected mayor of NYC in 2016, instead of POTUS, he’d have had to occupy a politics much further to the left than the guy who ran the Central Park Five ad in 1989.
