Great piece. The not true/not true/true sequence here caused me to stumble though: "It’s not true. Apple knows it’s not true, because they built and control all of the systems involved. Apple is very proud that this is true, and they should be" (but perhaps that's just my programmer's brain).

Setting up their own ads helps them prepare for the inevitable future (whenever that may be... they can slow roll it for now) without monster buck$ from Google. They'll have to offset those services dollars somehow.

It’s bad. App Store is awful—ads are stuffed everywhere. Apple TV App is awful just to browse content to buy I must get past a wall of Apple marketing. Apple Arcade is awful - starting a game and there’s notifications to check out something else. Apple, fuck off already.

The News+ situation is truly horrendous. Pi-hole used to help with it, but it seems Apple started serving ads from the same domains as regular news content and filtering no longer works

While I do agree with the overall thrust of what the Daring Fireball piece says, I view it as a little bit naive to think that letter from Cook in 2014 was anything other than damage control for ongoing PR issues to begin with.

Your comment about the hearing aid ads in Apple News is spot on. Low quality, highly repetitive, not targeted = ready to give up on the News app. I pay for iCloud+, Tim,John,Eddy you can do better.
