I find it weird that so many ppl are trying to insist that the US does not have a radicalization problem. 'Ppl vote for Trump bc they don't believe he'll put immigrants in camps but they do believe he'll fix the economy.' Shrugging at the threat of concentration camps is radicalization. Ask Germany

I still remember the radicalization efforts all the way back after 9/11 and blogs started to become news sources. All the rational people I followed made a slow slide into right-wing paranoia as they realized that content was lucrative.

When the issue at hand was the radicalization of young Muslim men--who had very legitimate grievances stemming from decades of colonialism and war--a lot of these same ppl were absolutely FULL of opinions. It's just, you know. Interesting.

I highly suggest everybody read In The Garden of Beasts sometime in the next 100 days. Radicalization doesn't look the way most people seem to think it looks.

Radicalization has a tendency of happening really fast. Most people will intentionally look the other way, insisting that their bubble can keep them safe while the bubble gradually decreases in size.

Or watch Cabaret. The clean-cut young blond man singing Tomorrows Belongs to Me” gave me the creeps when I first saw the movie in the 70s and I’ve been screaming ever since about how it can—did—happen here.

It's human nature to focus on "me" and discount anything that can be described as peripheral. I suspect that Mr Trump and his party are going to create a generation of political radicals just like the Great Depression and its do-nothing politicians did.

I think we played The Boy Who Cried Nazi. We forgot what kind of threat radicalization really is and we stopped taking it seriously. We just threw Klan, Nazi, and terrorist everywhere to the point of desensitization. Now we may have to relearn it as a country the hard way.

We? Some of us used Klan, Nazi, and terrorist appropriately while conservative, Republican rhetoricians tried their usual false equivalence rhetoric to portray everyone but them as racists, fascists, and terrorists. They may have achieved desensitization in that way. We didn't. We had to talk.

Yes, well, I disagree I did that, so I can't really accept being a part of that "we." I talked at length about what fascism is and is not, what racism is and is not, what constitutes political terrorism and who has been engaging in it, that sort.

With as much radicalism going on, I’m curious if you think that was the cause of the big lean towards Tr*mp, this round. Or blind ignorance. It feels like a lot of people were just angry w/ Biden & voted for Tr*mp just because he was the opposition (which makes the whole thing even scarier)

This 100%. I had a couple buddies I gamed with that I didn’t cut out because they weren’t rabid trumpers. I had to walk them through how they voted for concentration camps and every time they tried to deflect to “he won’t do that” while saying they want him to deport millions. They finally got…

…to “well yah there’ll be concentration camps but they won’t be gassing them like Hitler did”. And I asked - so you’re okay with “kinder, gentle concentration camps run by fed gov?” So they deflected again to “They see here illegally” And when I asked when they suddenly started to trust …

.. The fed gov to run something that large without errors that would lock up American citizens the conversation ended. They know what they voted for they just refuse to admit it even to themselves.

I honestly think more people voted for him because they believe he will put immigrants in camps, jail doctors who perform abortions and care for transgendered and reinstate Christian Nationalism into our schools.
