Partial counterpoint: new hardware is always unobtainable for a large number of children around the world, due to price. What do they play!? Everything they possibly can on every used console, simple mobile device, anything. Not great for new huge games, but you could sooner eradicate cockroaches.

If video game hardware becomes unobtainable for current children, there is no chance of this generation imprinting on it like the last two generations of children have. They will not grow into the adults we have now; the ones spending money on games. Games will end as we know them.

My only issue with this was that back when I was doing used games, the discount was deep. I was picking up ps1 disks for $15 and GameCube for $20 when xbox 360 disks were $60. Now I'm lucky to pay $60 for a used ds game. Used isn't cheap anymore, its become "collectable".

The specifics have definitely changed and the "cheap path" to gaming may not be secondhand or last-gen hardware in every case. It certainly has never been "valuable collectable." But it has been web games, mobile games, shared school or neighborhood PCs or bangs in various times and places
