axel kingdom hearts has such unfathomable aura loss in subsequent games that its easy to forget he is introduced murdering vexen in cold blood as he begs for his life like optimus prime in transformers 3

Kingdom Hearts is really good introducing likeable characters. It’s also really bad at developing them in the long term. Which is kind of a problem for one of the very few serialised long running JRPG series.

Axel’s gradual devolution into ‘the funny one’ is far from the only example of how KH really struggles to give anyone stuff to do after one or two entries, but it is one of the most egregious.

i realised talking through it that like. most kh characters are clearly designed for their endings. roxas exists to become sora, xion exists to do similar, the bbs trio are all clearly working backwards from their fates, but they keep everyone around after their story is clearly definitively over

The BBS trio are the weirdest example of this by far as they are so clearly written backwards towards their endings. And yet every before BBS is over, they’re already telling you in the Secret Ending, ‘don’t worry guys, they’re coming back.’

I think the problem is that, maybe around Days, Nomura did probably start to have the idea of ‘I’m gonna write all these inter connected mini tragedies and reverse them all in a big cathartic Everybody Lives moment.’ But because 3’s execution was a bit limp it just cheapens stuff in hindsight.

Like, this is pretty much exactly what Blank Points promised us was going to happen. I think we all just hoped the way it happened would be more satisfying, or that, once they were all back, these characters would like…do something.

also i think it works for the bbs trio abstractly even if badly executed but it doesnt work at all for roxas and axel who were dead dead
