axel kingdom hearts has such unfathomable aura loss in subsequent games that its easy to forget he is introduced murdering vexen in cold blood as he begs for his life like optimus prime in transformers 3

It does kind of fit, though. His character is mostly about being a dude that just wants to goof around with his buddies, but is initially trapped into the role of cool evil henchman.

Kingdom Hearts is really good introducing likeable characters. It’s also really bad at developing them in the long term. Which is kind of a problem for one of the very few serialised long running JRPG series.

Axel’s gradual devolution into ‘the funny one’ is far from the only example of how KH really struggles to give anyone stuff to do after one or two entries, but it is one of the most egregious.

i realised talking through it that like. most kh characters are clearly designed for their endings. roxas exists to become sora, xion exists to do similar, the bbs trio are all clearly working backwards from their fates, but they keep everyone around after their story is clearly definitively over

The BBS trio are the weirdest example of this by far as they are so clearly written backwards towards their endings. And yet every before BBS is over, they’re already telling you in the Secret Ending, ‘don’t worry guys, they’re coming back.’

It's kinda tragic that they turned him into the wink at the camera funny meta joke guy. I guess you could argue that it's only Lea that's like that.

he’s still my goat but his stocks are downnnnn and like, while I get it in the grander context of KH3, him having a Keyblade now is really lame compared to what he was using before

i think what’s funny about kh is that there’s like ten characters with a nobel sacrifice and by 3 they are all fine. not a problem

And then there's your noble sacrifice, where you were reincarnated into the MC of a cancelled game then did such a bad job raising your son that he became a supervillain. You took a pretty big L on that one.
