of course wild salmon is often preferred but that's why prices are higher (and ought to be so), and there should be strictly enforced regulation on labelling. also sushi and sashimi salmon is almost entirely farmed salmon *because* of the higher parasite risk of wild salmon.

Good points! Worth adding that some organic salmon farmers do actually answer these points. Whether their answers would be satisfactory, would be interesting to know!

Oh yes. Thanks. So birds and fish are more akin and less of a food group risk then. Is that due to digestive processes in fish or the physiology of the two species?

It was rendered sheep and cattle being fed to cows - the hypothesis is that scrapie from sheep evolved into BSE. Anyway, the gist is, don't muck about with the food chain for profit or very bad things will happen.

Thanks for highlighting this. Fish do not naturally eat chickens & some executive saying otherwise must think the public are stupid. Salmon / farmed fish will be banned In my household until I am confident the practice of feeding fish with poultry, livestock etc is abolished.

This should be stated on any and all packaging right down to consumer level. We have grass-fed beef. So label this chicken-fed salmon. Or are such claims only done when a marketing person says they should be and not for real consumer information? (No answer needed.)

Feeding meat to meat is a new level of inefficiency in terms of land use from this shitty industry. Be interesting to see the calculations for home much protein/calories from the original grain feedstuffs remain once one consumes the salmon.

Who was buying them? Possibly Mars Inc (as in M&M’s, Mars bars, Snickers etc.), they are one of the world’s biggest pet food manufacturers, most of their revenue comes from that. Left overs, low food-value stuff can be turned into fertiliser or the abattoir just throws it into the anaerobic digester
