If you're tired of windows, adobe, etc... I've been solely using linux for around 10 years and around 3 years doing full freelance work with it. Linux is a solid alternative.

And update on my Linux journey, a couple of weeks back I decided to daily drive Fedora as an experiment to see if it was possible to use it instead of windows as a game dev/3D artist. I was surprised with how well it ran and performed and with proton almost all game from steam ran out of the box.

Switched to linux once and although I liked its simplicity it wasn't without its problems so I eventually switched back to Windows. I might go back though because I have windows more and more... 😮‍💨 I'm just not really sure how viable it is for game dev

If my job didn't require me to test frequently on Windows, I'd swap. Now that Rider and other alternatives that I enjoy are available on Linux, it's super viable.

Most development environments and engines have Linux ports of some description, Lumen even works in UE these days. Main OS is Windows still, switching my entire environment and build chain to Linux is a 10 minute job at most. I at least test on it in 2025 Consider also open SteamOS/Bazzite.

I switched to Linux in December! I love it. Not without its headaches though. What do you use for graphics work? I still switch back to Windows and Mac to use Photoshop.

My top used is probably blender, but for visual stuff I'll say: Blender (3d, quick video editing) Kdenlive Inkscape Krita (drawing mainly) Gimp (quick edits) Scribus (print layout) Aseprite

I’ve tried to learn GIMP but oh man it’s so rough in comparison to the top of the line tools. I should probably just force myself to get used to it. I wish there was a Blender level open source equivalent for graphics

Yeah, I had been dual booting up until Windows 8, but after they started forcing updates in the middle of my work I switched to Linux entirely and haven't looked back. 10+ years now.
