Building the design system for my company, I noticed that the ability to cascade text styles is done on the react layer using react context. It'd be great if this happened on the native layer instead

Yeah I know him and the library. But the required code is so small, I’d rather not install a third party package for it.

Downsides? You lose some "features" (like text style inheritance in nested Text and a few others), but it’s worth it, especially for lists and nested views. Migrating View to LeanView alone is a big win. Just apply case-by-case and measure.
