I had a great time talking at the Callstack AI meetup!

Still wrestling with generic tools for your dev workflow? It's time to build your own. In this talk from our AI Meetup, @raf.dev shows you how to create custom, AI-powered tools like a personal slide generator with React and an AI dev notebook with Astro ➡️ youtu.be/MWGeGtIhf7o?...

this is cool, I made myself a webapp to help me manage and combine styles and characters to use with gpt-image-1. It's like my own personal midjourney

Tomorrow I'm giving a small talk about how to get hired as a software eng in 2025. I built my self a slide presentation webapp, and I can get Claude Code to automatically generate images for the slides for me using the OpenAI API. This is so much better than Keynote.

I recently switched from Cursor to Claude Code and I like it way more. I'm a terminal person who uses Vim, and I didn't want to go back to VSCode for AI coding. Let me tell you what I like about Claude Code. 🧵

Custom slash commands dramatically improve the developer experience. You could maintain a document with useful prompts, but accessing them via /commands makes you more invested in creating reusable workflows. It's like using a prompt as a function.

Sub-agents solve the biggest friction with AI coding tools. The main friction is running out of context. Sub-agents let you parallelize work and save context since each has its own context. Just tell Claude to use sub-agents in your prompt.

You can still use images in the context of your conversation with Claude Code. I thought I'd lose the ability to use images switching to a terminal tool. But you can copy and paste images into Claude Code just like with Cursor.

Claude Code's planning approach is much better than Cursor. The way it responds in chat gives me confidence that it's breaking down work into tasks properly. Instead of jumping straight to implementation, it reads files first, thinks through the problem, and makes a plan.

This looks so cool

I've been thinking a lot about the future of software developer jobs. I wonder what's going to happen. On one hand there's going to be a lot of pressure to produce more. But on the other hand, AI gives developers a lot of power and freedom to build whatever they want.

Every software company should have a weekly "what sucks" meeting on Friday, where you look at the product and list out the things that suck. Then you fix them first thing on Monday

I was hoping to practice my AppJS talk on Saturday at a local tech event, but I was just told they can't do it for some reason. Hmmm, what to do.

I know there's a lot of uncertainty about whether software jobs are going to go away. But do developers understand how much more empowered they are?

Niiiiiice. The latest ridiculous thing I saw on Boylston St: a moped riding on the bike lane almost running over a girl on a bike going the wrong way on that same bike lane 🤦‍♂️

I predict a generational divide: As we see more and more AI avatars that look like a real person, older people will find that offensive, while younger people will find that perfectly acceptable. For some reason I think AI generated voice is fine but a fake AI person is gross

I accidentally stayed up all night hacking a side project that uses the new open ai image model. I've been wanting something that helps me explore art styles.

I've been making myself a UI to generate images with the new gpt-image-1 model. This feels way faster than using it through the ChatGPT app. This model requires personal verification. I had to take a picture of my drivers license and scan my face in order to use it 😳😳😳

I don't know if I know anyone at Facebook, but after logging into my account I get a 500 GQL error on a `/checkpoint` page. Because I can't get past this page, I don't even have access to support, so how does one even get this fixed?

It's crazy how quickly you can get things done with Cursor. This took me like half an hour of voice dictating into cursor to build. I did a lot of iterations on the design
