Even the phrasing "carbon footprint" feels like way to shift blame to us people, individuals (with feet...), from companies like this. Feet? These companies don't even have a fucking spine.

It was literally a marketing term invented by BP and invested in HEAVILY. They deliberately made it the "individuals responsibility" so that corporations could contribute getting away with ecological murder.
