"We're improvisation-based, rehearsal-based directors," said Joe Russo about why they filmed Avengers: Doomsday without a finished script, with further tweaks to the Marvel blockbuster taking place on set during shooting. https://bit.ly/4iOrcRc

It's worth noting that while the Russos dudes will be remembered for making Disney a buttload of money, there isn't a single film school on the planet that will ever study any of their films, and that's because they have less creative talent than Michael Bay. That's why they don't "need" a script.

Iron Man was not made under similar circumstances and this claim being propped up so often is just infuriating at this point. They hadn't written all the dialogue and that was improvised, but they had the storybeats ready. Which is implied not to be the case here

Because all the film is - like all Marvel films - is glorified product placement. It's live action Funko Pops nonsense. You don't need a script for that, because there's nothing in the film that actually matters.

That is why the CGI is generally crap, because nothing is set or even storyboarded before they shoot, which often results in reshoots, so cgi artists are left to do things last minute. Disney's fumble of the MCU should be studied in business schools.

In principle, this sounds absurd to me. But it's not their first rodeo, and they've delivered in superhero flicks so far-- Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame are on the short list for maximalist Marvel successes. So... I guess they get a shot here before I call 'em foolish.

Those are all abysmally bad films. Try this: Watch a Russos film that isn't just one long comic book fan service product placement. Is it even watchable? JFC no. These two are incompetent filmmakers.

It's only a massive production. Why should there be a finished script before starting? This quote epitomizes the lack of real preproduction and forcing scripts to work around massive VFX set pieces that plagues movies like these

You are exactly right. Disney announces release dates before scripts are even finished, and then the production suffers as a result. I'm not saying the MCU was high art, but the nosedive in quality over the last number of years is unmistakable, and I have zero faith in Doomsday being a good movie.

It's like the Hobbit trilogy. They had troubled preproduction and were bad movies as a result. But Martin Freeman was perfectly cast as Bilbo and he had great chemistry with Richard Armitage (Thorin), so I found myself enjoying those parts of the movies.
