It's not just that it was hard its that it was hardCORE. It was a game for the kind of people who live and breathe Bungie games. They're in the discord, they're on the subreddit, they don't need social tools in the game and they're find with a grind.

Hell, they WANT to make sure they are rewarded for having a set crew with voice chat and 3 hours a night to run a raid or something. Progression wipe every season? No problem, they'll put in 100+ hours a season easy.

Marathon failed at launch because companies think they hold the power over gamers and tried to cancel destiny and hold it hostage to get gamers to play marathon and now both games are dead or dying. Destiny may be getting more content (because they realised late) but the company can't be trusted.

Difficulty probably mattered, but the bigger problem may be asking a crowded market to learn a punishing new loop before giving them a reason to stay. Bungie still has time to make the on-ramp feel welcoming.

Maybe because it adds nothing to what already exists and forcing dodgy creative options and then blaming the community for lack of interest doesn’t help. Oh, if only they’d learn from recent mistakes like Concord..

I’d read the article and see what they said before I started talking about them blaming the community. They’re explicit about missing the mark and making something that wasn’t going to be popular outside of absolute PvP and extraction sickos.

I have played it. I loved everything about it outside of the unforgiving loop. I don’t know what that has to do with bungie and their attitude though. And their attitude up til this week was basically begging people to give it a chance. I don’t know where you’re getting “blaming the players.”

I agree with this statement, it would be denial to say the game was easy to get on. You can have a game that is hard to master but hard to get on, for a gaas, it’s a death sentence. You need to appeal to a mass, if the entry door is too hard to push then it’s a big problem.
