oh man, so many complicated feelings about Spiegelman admitting to using "A.i." for a commercial piece… Not going to let it affect my appreciation for the work he did earlier in his career.

Actually more disheartening to read that Mouly is 'good at Claude whispering'. I mean, I guess it's good that an AD is familiar with slop output, so they'll know it when they see it?

I don't know. The pair have been a lifetime inspiration from me for what they started with RAW Books, for the artists they showcased and elevated, for their self-publishing ambitions, and for MAUS of course.

A case could be made that, with Art's career-long exploration of the nature of 'comics' and 'art', it's inevitable that he would experiment with any tools available to him. Still, this one is disappointing. Saw someone say that it's a sign that he's just not very online, and yeah, I can see that…

I know for sure among my non-artist friends there's not as much hatred and animosity towards gen-Ai and it's users. Trying to explain to folks why it's an existential threat to me makes me feel like a tin-hat crank.

So I could almost forgive an artist who's not terminally online being more willing to use it for some work. But I have a harder time believing that Mouly was unaware of the issues surrounding it.

On the THIRD hand, I can also imagine they're both at a point in their lives/careers where they feel like, 'Fuck it, nothing matters anymore anyway'. I don't see either of them seeing any real consequences from this. I'm not saying that makes it *okay*, just maybe understandable.

Personally, I haven't seen anything new by Spiegelman in the last 25 years that really hit me like the stuff he did in the 80s & 90s. I mean, has he put out another non-reprint book in that time? If I don't read anything else new by him in the next 20 years, so be it. I'll still have MAUS and RAW.
