Batteries aren't power sources. They're at best storage. And even in a country as ridiculously car addicted as the US you couldn't power the grid off car batteries for long before they'd need recharging... Even if all cars were EVs....

Calling them "power plants" is not accurate. They can only store energy, not produce it in any significant way. Even regeneration only recaptures a portion of the energy expended. It's important to be accurate. False claims about EVs will be exploited by the haters.

The article, or more accurately, the sub headline calls them 'virtual power plants', a term which is not actually used in the article... it is 'important to be accurate' after all. The concept is not new, UK Power companies already support it e.g. octopus.energy/power-pack/

octopus.energyOctopus Power Pack: the UK’s first Vehicle-to-Grid tariffTry the UK's first Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) tariff, Octopus Power Pack. Sign up, plug in, and charge for free.

This will work great! Right up to the point you want to actually take credit for capacity value, but no one wants to depleted their vehicles during a multi-day tight period...

And then, there is the sociotechnical component as well. Dark doldrum, news report about it, people start hoarding electricity like they did with Toilet paper, decouple their car batteries from the grid.

“Rival” nuclear energy?! We need nuclear energy charge them first, sillies. Yes, EV batteries could help us smooth our power grid during times of high demand, when we’re already over reliant on intermittent sources like solar. Or we could build out our grid differently. Ultimately, we need a mix

Texas? That state has bathroom ID laws and America said "good" men becoming women is crazy or impossible 🙄 That state is supposed to be ok it has millions of people. Why would they do that? It involves polling locations, universities, public schools. You know that sounds like Jim Crow laws 🤔

Why the fk don’t they just put solar panels on top of cars? They sit out in the sun all day unless you’re in a garage. If we got rid of bombs and stopped breeding like rats, (IUD’s), the world would actually heal. Our lives on earth would change positively for every creature and plant.

The integration of solar into the roof of the Fisker Ocean was one of my favorite things about it. Still, it's an expense that takes too long for any amount of real energy payback. More efficient to spend on a small solar installation for your roof or yard.

Mainly because they don't generate very much energy. The Fisker Ocean optimally generates 300 watts at noon in Southern California. Cars aren't under those optimal for very long, though. Owners report generating 20-60 kWh a year. That's maybe enough power for one house for one day.

EVs and PHEVs provide excellent distributed storage and local backup power generation. If the grid goes out, power from centralized plants will not reach the consumer. One PHEV could serve a local community as long as renewable energy and/or fuel was sufficient to augment batteries

V2G has been studied at least since 2014, needed to resolve who owns impact on EV battery and how the owner is compensated for their energy. Good to see Toyota picking this up!

Zod no point in repeating this the battery can be charged when power is cheaper during the day(Solar Power) and connected to the grid at night when power is more expensive (Fossil Fuel) and the person would create some profit from his storage bring his running costs down and the use of fossil fuel

Thing is, people tend to charge their cross that they can drive them during the day. A home battery is a different proposition to a BEV, best not to get the two confused.

Now days there are inverters can use the V2G as the house battery instead of putting the power back into the grid lets not confuse the issue power in Day time You Buy "cheap" power out Night time You Sell "expensive" if you have Solar Panels your profit is MORE For that one time investment

I need 2 read about how safe disposals, from age & accidents, will B, since we know vehicles & their parts age, & vehicles R in road accidents. We haven’t, even figured out nuclear power plants, safe waste disposal & what 2 safely do in accidents. This is the 👎wealthy👎BS, blindsided by greed.

I just checked solar panels are so much cheaper now that i am looking at putting 5kw to 7 kw system on my home which would cut my power bill to nearly zero and if i had a EV prob cost me nothing to drive for less than $10 k to $12 k and create some profit that's 4 years of my power bill

There is another angle to this you could have lets say hybrids running on hydrogen charging the car battery as the person commutes daily and then connect the battery to the grid then they would be a Power Source and a Storage unit Interim you could use fossil fuels & they would cut emission outputs

Yeah no one can rival Nuke power except solar wind & helliostatic hydroelectric & any other form The most expensive way to make power is nuclear & takes the longest to build, maintenance is excessive with disposal of nuke waste makes it impractical again by a multitude not to mention an accident

Can you expand at all? We have the capability to install/daily charge from renewables/& distribute energy to the home from battery farms. We could do this now. So why not? Let's change (global economies still revolve on the price of a barrel of oil) We need to change distribution models.

Present batteries have a thousand or so charge-discharge cycles. Not an exact number, but still finite. There needs to be a price tag to compensate for the deteriorating of the pricey battery.

If you use a bank of batteries as a refillable source, of course it has a finite lifespan as anything does. But it can be renewed and/or replaced modularly and managed accordingly as any power station is.

So many haters in here that aren't forward thinking. Opponents of solar always ask, "what do we do when the sun goes down (har har)?" The answer is: we draw off of literally millions of plugged in EV batteries that have more charge than needed for the next day. Then recharge when there is sun.

Yes, it will require a big change in where and when we plug in. Yes, it will require some inovation in devices and software. Yes, it will require more solar panels. But we didnt have computers, air travel, space travel, the lightbulb, refrigeration, the internet, mobile networks, etc until we did.

Power walls with big batteries and solar production are great ideas just teslas walls are tiny batteries which cant power a house for a long periods to many many people cant do research with google have look some time
