Chase sends 8-digit 2fa SMS codes, which seems excessive compared to the 6 that most other places use, but even weirder is that the first digit of them has always been the same, effectively making it a 7 digit code. Anyone know what's up with that?

Dear lord, why do I reply to anything. The rationale for some universal starting number is a kind of internal consistency with regards to support and communication. Whether CC number or 2FA or any other thing.

If it were for something other than SMS 2fa I could see that, but there is exactly one place I should ever enter these codes, so they don't need that kind of extra check

People make up all kind of wacky reasons in the systems they build. Maybe only Production has that starting number and Stage another. It doesn’t have to make complete sense.
