Jackdaw doesn't matter in practical terms: it's a rounding error in emissions. But: it will do absolutely nothing to improve the UK's "energy security", nor to make UK energy prices any cheaper. So it's a step in the wrong direction on climate, for no actual benefit. That's not great.

It's a fractionally small supply and the UK is not isolated from the European energy market, so yeah, it has essentially zero effect on prices. The UK'S problem is that gas sets the marginal price of our electricity, and adding a small amount more gas supply does nothing to change that.

I think that unfortunately if it wasn't approved then the death cult that has become our right wing press would incessantly link the energy cost increase from trumps Iran war to net zero and reduce support. I don't like it, but I can see the practicality.

In the Big Bad World, isn't there a good case for saying we have to exploit every reserve as it becomes economically viable, so we're not a target to hostile actors later?

The problem is that the new environmental impact assessment (which is why this is all happening) says that Jackdaw *reduces* emissions (due to substituting LNG) so the government doesn't have grounds to block it. On Rosebank this argument is much weaker so shouldn't assume it will go the same.

Jackdaw’s problem is not only its emissions. It has no visible bill mechanism: no cheaper wholesale power, lower network charge or smaller tax levy follows from approving it.

I do not see how a uk energy source can fail to increase its energy security. It might not have much effect, but nor does any single wind farm.

It always matters cumulatively. More emissions from JD, more from missing HP target/pulling back on BUS, more from scrapping ECO, more from delaying ZEV mandate. Each is another hole in the carbon budgets they have to exist within.

I dont know i think its quite clever political . It spikes kemi useless and her client press attacks on not trying to get cheap energy and appease some union members tempted to vote reform instead of labour. As for the rest of us, there are other issues

All efforts across the world to reduce emissions are cancelled out by (at least) America as they're building gas powered stations around all the data centers to provide the energy. They can emit up to 662 million metric tons of greenhouse gases annually, UK projections are 4.5 million per station.

Everything we've achieved to reduce carbon emissions over the years and everything we're attempting is probably being wiped out through powering the data centres. I don't think Jackdaw will make much difference now. Data centres seem to rule the day.

We have a skilled workforce in the North Sea that will be important when it comes to wind farms and pylons and cables under the sea for net zero. Keep them busy till we're ready. Jackdaw.

Won't bring jobs and brings very little in tax revenue, it will secure gas supply in the short term though, James is wrong there. This is very much a short term fix to prevent supply shock this winter and nothing more.

It's too little to make a noticeable difference to anything. Like 3 grains more sugar in your tea. WGAF. Get your electricity from UK renewables >electrify everything > never have to bow to foreign despots again> sing GSTK in our glorious utopia

I disagree. Combating climate change is fundamentally about removing demand. There's no point shutting our own supply down then buying from other countries. It's like someone deciding to become a vegetarian by closing their local abattoir but not actually stopping eating meat.

The choice unfortunately at the moment is opening up Jackdaw or importing more gas from further away, causing more environmental damage There has, is and hopefully will continue to be massive roll out of renewable energy, but it takes time In the short term this is the best option

Have you seen what is happening in the Americas? 1 gas and 1 oil field in the North Sea are completely dwarfed by méga projects in Argentina, Venezuela, Suriname and GoM. May as well get some local jobs.
