Why is it newspapers seem to be holdouts in making it overly difficult to cancel subscriptions, or stop auto-renewing trials? This approach is incredibly scammy and almost all users must have enough experience with other subscription services to know it's not for any technical reasons.

You can subscribe to the NYT through Google play and the experience is much better. Shameful on the Time's part.

This is why I use Paypal for subscriptions. Just go into your Paypal account and cancel the recurring payment. You’ll get a few emails from the media outlet to ask you to update your payment option, which you can safely ignore. They soon get the message.

Of course Times journalists have covered similar issues with other services, while their commercial team uses exact same tactics.

This is Times of London btw, not NYT, first response after I asked to stop auto-renewal was to tell me, even though I'd emailed the overseas customer services contact from my account registered in Hong Kong, to call the UK hotline to cancel...
