If this were a card game, I'd call the separatists' bluff. But this isn't a game. It's our democracy and our national unity. And it's not my call. It's the premier's. In all likelihood, she won't have the benefit of an independent verification of the separatists' cards. What a mess.🧵

We have control over what we believe. When it comes to the number of signatures collected, we don't have to take Mitch Silvestre's word as fact. We can treat the fact he said it as fact. There's a world of difference between those two. bsky.app/profile/jare...

With the distinct possibility that the courts will prevent validation of the Stay Free Alberta petition, we are left with a single source for the separatists' claim that they collected enough signatures to spark a referendum. And that source is far from trustworthy.👇 But also...🧵

They didn’t even get the amount needed for the previous rules with double the time and access to the voters list. Meanwhile, Forever Canadian got more than the previous rules needed in half the time and no voters list.

If, instead of calling their bluff, the premier takes the separatists at their word, we have every reason to question her commitment to democratic processes and national unity.
