This just does not seem politically realistic to me. You cannot expect the general public to accept as legitimate the removal of a sitting president by a secret vote. Especially when premised on the idea that you’ll allow Republicans to vote to convict without publicly admitting it.

Stephen Wolf@stephenwolf.bsky.social

“The majority also sets the rules, and the first rule it should change is how the final vote is cast. The Senate can adopt a secret ballot on conviction by simple majority under its own rulemaking power, with each senator’s vote recorded in the Senate’s journal and sealed for a term of years.”

Not a big story, it's just the Attorney General working with an imprisoned pedophile to help cover up the pedophile President's crimes conducted with his best friend for 15 years, a pedophile who the President sent, as a birthday card, a drawing of a naked adolescent girl.

This report is genuinely overwhelming, in terms of the evidence both against Trump and of a ham-fisted cover-up. Including one instance in which Ghislaine Maxwell was actually about to mention one of Trump's young accusers and Todd Blanche told her to stop talking. The media response is "yawn."

A high-turnout election! Bradford got more votes losing than all but 2 winners in Toronto's post-1997 history, and both those cases were incumbents running against relatively weaker challengers. Olivia Chow, of course, won *even more* making her the most vote-getting politician in Canadian history.

Instead we should focus on which messages, ideas, and visions beyond "we need to beat the far right" have mobilized large parts of society. We should understand the organizational structures behind these victories and acknowledge that they are about more than defending the status quo.

Many comments on the great election victories in Brazil and Serbia state that the authorian right is in decline or that voters have rejected far-right authoritarianism. That is a wrong interpretation of what happened. Progressive movements mobilized and beat the authoritarian right. That's different

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.
