i went to see the social reckoning movie yesterday. it was a small theater outside of downtown on a cloudy afternoon. i thought with all the headlines of it 'bombing' opening weekend, the theater would be empty, but there were still >50 people watching with me. most of them were middle aged or older

it was a good follow-up to original movie, in typical aaron sorkin style. i'm glad that story got told, and they did a good job explaining the technical details in understandable terms. they kept the numbers simple (64% of people who joined extremist groups did so after the algorithm suggested them)

as i sat there in the theater looking around at my fellow movie-goers, i wondered how many of them had watched friends get radicalized on facebook. how many had seen a loved one fall down a conspiratorial rabbit hole because the algorithm suggested that content and kept feeding them more and more?

it just renewed my motivation for building @frequency.app. fb, instagram - they are holding our friends and family hostage and manipulating their reality every day, and they don't care about the cost to us. we need to have good alternatives that show people it doesn't have to be that way.
