In order for the grilled cheese to be a grilled cheese, it needs to be bread, butter, and cheese. And if it's not a majority of cheese, then we can't classify it as a grilled cheese anymore. If that's the case, then we'd start considering things like a cheeseburger a grilled cheese.

I'm a GC purist. Buttered--not mayo'ed--bread. Cheese without bits in it. Cheese inside bread. Golden brown. I want crunch & gooey-ness. Cheese pull is fine but only if the strand doesn't become Satan's whip & lash my chin. I want to bite into it & be transported back to simple times w/ my Gram.

100% must be buttered. I’ve tried mayo and I don’t understand who hurt those folks. I do like a good purist comfort grilled cheese, but when I have the energy to make my homemade strawberry habanero jam, it’s REALLY GOOD on a grilled cheese 😅

Had a friend accidentally/successfully cross a habanero w/a scotch bonnet. Me: Save the seeds, grow more. Her: Can't. Saw it, picked it, ate it in 1 bite. 🤦 I don't have her cast-iron stomach. She's eaten a jar of jalapenos for breakfast. Drank ghost pepper sauce. There's not a pepper she wont try

In my culture, any grilled sandwich with cheese is a grilled cheese. ("grilled ham and cheese" and "grilled cheese with tomato" are some of our most sacred culinary traditions). Calling it a melt makes you fancy. Breakfast sandwiches must be on a bagel, muffin or biscuit.

For me, a grilled ham and cheese isn’t a grilled cheese, it’s moved into a different genre of food. A thin slice of tomato that still leaves it mostly cheese is still a grilled cheese 🤷
