a while back I made a mod for Doom 3 as proof of concept for "this game would be better without cutscenes" in this scene the player walks into a room with a window behind which people are talking, and we get a cutscene of the player watching through the window. just let me look through the window!

Neat point. Though obvs for only some kinds of scenes and hard to make it skippable. And I imagine it's often handy to give making the cutscenes to a separate team that's used to cinematics.
