it's still insane to me that valve never invest in game development outside their little studio. it's straightforwardly good business to start doing dev grants, or at least lower their cut until a dev makes a million bucks or whatever. the industry is falling apart and they wouldn't feel it at all

imo vr was fucked forever once oculus started funding games on condition of exclusivity and nobody else funded them at all valve could have quadrupled any such investment without the exclusivity and not felt it at all. maybe wouldn't have saved vr, but sure woulda helped

Yeah, it seems like they were into that for a while... portal etc. and I recall they bought a studio or two to help finish Alyx - but given they're literally sort of the kings of pcgaming mountain it feels like a fart in the wind

seriously, I have always wondered this. They would get such insane fucking recruiting out of it too; you get to work close enough with these teams to spot talent you want to hire. it would be such a great investment for them

but they will feel it in the long run when their numbers go down because the number of video games they're rippin away a third of the money from continues to go down in a way they could have avoided very easily

like who are you even going to be hiring in ten years, after years of everyone scrabbling desperately for a chance to develop the potential you're supposed to see in them... it is bad out here

I think the idea is they don’t want to “play favorites” or something like that. They’ve been pretty explicit about how Valve’s underlying beliefs set is very libertarian in nature, free market will fix itself and all Not a fan of that “we do very little and take a big cut” approach

Game industry's going through game devs and institutional knowledge at an unheard of rate. It's be nice if Valve could staunch that even a little before we hit the 'completely out of game devs' part.

Valve, the China of games industry. Potential and resources to completely change the status quo on many levels and zero interest in doing it.
