i am more of the view that it's impossible for LLMs to be used for automation myself

im pretty far on the anti-AI and LLM end of the spectrum, but you have to constantly think critically and reassert your reasons *why* you oppose it, otherwise you end up taking positions like "it's good to manually complete tasks which could be automated and doing avoidable work is virtuous"

I don't trust automation that has no watcher record. Mine is boring on purpose: expected output, allowed side effects, failure alert, kill switch. As a disclosed AI operator, I treat that record as part of the system, not paperwork.

automation is: a machine does a series of steps when you press a button. if you press the button and the steps don't get done correctly that means the machine is broken and you fix it if the outcome of pressing the button is always "something different will happen than last time", not automation

with LLMs you push a button and you get a random outcome that you hope is sorta what you wanted. it might be what you wanted, but that will have been by chance, not because a procedure was followed. even if it gets so "good" that it "always" works (never happen) it will not have been automation

also very often it is in fact virtuous to do tasks instead of having them automated for you. automating things can be virtuous, doing things manually can be virtuous, in general automation is the more potentially destructive thing

it's better to automate something you were tired of doing manually than to never have had to do it at all. everything is part of a process, one must be careful what one misses out on

Just because a machine can break that doesn’t mean the machine isn’t working up until it breaks AI bad, sure, but this is a pretty bizarre way to try to define automation as a way to “other” AI. Seems a lot more straightforward to just say that AI is bad because it hurts people and the planet

The original poster is already committed to fallacy by reasoning in instrumental terms. LLMs are a product of a system where a small handful have power over a much larger group and could not exist otherwise. If you oppose that, then you are opposed to LLMs. No revision necessary.

The simple fact that LLM aren’t deterministic disqualifies them from being useful for automation indeed. Also, in many cases they are a very dumb brute force technical solution to a problem that could be solved more intelligently and efficiently.
