I have a lot of thoughts on AI in game development that I just need to shout into the void somehow, so please bear with me for a second: A big argument for easy game creation tools is that it gives non technical-minded people the ability to create games.

The advancement of AI tools hasn't attracted the same crowd though. It attracts people who are VERY MUCH already in the tech sphere, but didn't have an interest in creating games before. It's the exact inverse of what happened in the early 2000s when GameMaker and RPGMaker were more widely adopted.

Another reason why this isn't comparable to the advancements of game engines is the prohibitive pricing: If you really want to get into effective agentic coding, you will need access to one of the frontier models and that will cost you quite a bit of money every month.

This is not a plunge most people can take, but it does make it easier for people who already have capital. In the past, advancements like this have empowered artists to make software. This time around it seems like it mostly empowers entrepreneurs to diversify their product portfolio.

In the end it's just another redistribution of opportunity and wealth from the bottom to the top. ... of course all of this is happening outside game development too. Societal structure will be pretty fucky in a bit I think.
