The measurement problem/challenge in the digital age continues. A view on platforms is a black box. So when someone touts 3 million views, it means nothing. Except! As a measurement exec told me 15 yrs ago: "A standard is just a lie that an industry agrees to"

By tracking views from the instant a video starts to play, YouTube's new counter works more like TikTok, X, and Instagram. www.theverge.com/streaming/98...

I could have **years** of my life back trying to explain this to wapo executives who would constantly tout nonsense numbers and even compare video starts to Nielsen ratings. Once had a publisher claim more people were watching some panel discussion streams than watching cable news.

it's funny how the executives never want to hear the reality, just the manufactured metric. whether it's the publisher or the agency or the advertiser. yes, much easier when circ depts at print pubs ruled the roost, or nielsen + tv. and now, it's all just ... nonsense. 1 second! 3 seconds! 6 seconds
