demoscapes.org is a visual atlas of demographic surfaces hosted at @mpidr.bsky.social. It is also my passion project growing out of my 2016 human mortality database explorer. Did you publish something containing Lexis surfaces? Consider reaching out and having your work featured on the site.

Check out @jschoeley.com's very cool project: Demoscapes! It now features interactive Lexis surfaces based on our recent PNAS paper tracking cohort trends in major causes of death in the US. It's (to us data lovers) so fun! demoscapes.org/collections/...

Thank you so much. Young male accident mortality was always there, but only shows up in the sex ratio once infections, as a substantial cause of premature mortality for both sexes, declined. Maternal mortality for young woman, yes.

is it maternal mortality? That's surely a factor, but as marked here, peak excess female mortality is actually between age 10 and 20 in mid 19th C and then shifts to between about 5 and 15 in late 19th/early 20th, so it can't all be... & avg childbearing age even historically was in early-mid 20s.

The left flank of the hill is male cohorts picking up smoking when they were young and then dying as a result later. The right flank of the hill is women catching up with men in their smoking behavior, balancing the sex ratio of mortality.
