it's interesting that every single AI doomsday newscycle just floats over the fact that a bunch of corrupt and incompetent clowns (many of which were openly supported by young white male tech employees) disemboweled regulatory autonomy like it's kind of an important part of the conversation

the fact that corruption has hollowed out U.S. corporate oversight almost entirely with the ENTHUSIASTIC support of a massive swath of Silicon Valley should warrant at least a paragraph somewhere if we're going to have any serious conversation about tech ethics

I will die on the hill that corporate power and the right/libertarian assault on regulatory autonomy and corporate oversight is a MUCH bigger threat to life and limb than software going sentient and trying to kill us all and it's not like you couldn't write hyperbolic headlines about the former

most of them support a TON of Trump's "deregulatory" agenda but attack him on free speech issues so you'll forget they played a huge role in the former

It's not a competition, unfortunately. The AI problems aren't just about them going sentient, although that's a concern. The two larger problems with AI today are goal alignment in task performance (see Hugging Face) and misuse of their capability for nefarious ends (today's news about Claude).

I'm not trying to minimize the destruction of our democracy by these fascist white supremacist fuckers. And practically, fixing democracy here might assist in getting effective AI regulation moving. Pick a battle and fight it, I think is the thing to do.

In that same vein denial of climate change is right up there as an equally fraught risk to our existence, but I guess warnings from hundreds of research scientists over literally decades in academia doesn’t have the street cred of one former Anthropic employee?
