Fun fact, the main problem with apples is storage and shipping logistics. That's why if you go to an orchard all the boring old varieties are also fantastic. They just are bland ass because of the supply chain. (I also love the apple Renaissance)

Remember how it used to be that you could only get bland ass red delicious apples and occasionally granny smiths? We're in a real apple renaissance now and it's great.

Same in grocery retail: buyers picked varieties for shelf life and shipping tolerance first, taste second. Do you see growers moving to local sales to escape that?

I do, but I think it's a hard problem. I love CSAs and our local orchards that grow heirloom and new varieties. But I live in the frozen North and have no desire to return to making depression era faux apple pies out of saltines for half the year. Hybridization seems like the only sustainable route.
