question to younger people in tech: how do you get hired (the initial step, to a hiring manager) these days? my understanding is job applications don’t work. What does?

Started my first job last year. Spamming job applications to startups mostly but it took a long time (~little over a year after graduating with my bs) Only ever got the one interview. Im very lucky that I did well
