There are so many climate policy conversations in so many places around the world on "pragmatism", "realism", "compromise" etc How many of them include this end of the equation?

David Roberts@volts.wtf

"A series of deadly heat waves from May to August overwhelmed Germany’s healthcare and emergency response systems and led to an estimated 16,000 heat-related deaths during the summer, the most heat mortalities ever recorded in the highly developed country."

Riding a bike or catching the bus is pretty pragmatic IMO. Plenty of us can do the basics better for big improvements in CO2 effects and a lot of them are life improvements. EVs are way better than petrol. Riding a bike to work is nice and reduces stress, heat pump hot water is cheaper etc.

I would suggest even worse, is the constant „financial viability“ argument. Nature doesn‘t understand finances and there are no physics equations that include $s. Nature „understands“ energy. Europe is soooo unprepared and continues to say „we don’t have the money for that“ 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Bus companies that replace their diesel fleet with electric tend to save money. Electrifying your home is cheaper than using gas and doesn’t bring poisonous fumes in. There are lots of things we can all do that are generally life upgrades.

The steps after those will get more cumbersome and expensive and we should be prepared to pay. But right now there a lot of low hanging fruit that we should focus on.

True & that further opens the discussion. If all energy were 5 times as expensive, it would be „cost effective“ to insulate their homes first, adapting to heat & cold, then install a smaller conditioning device using much less energy. UK is shifting subsidies for this to its defense budget. 🤦‍♂️

@ketanjoshi.co why is everyone lately like as if these very bad consequences we predicted will happen all of a sudden ... don't happen to us? there is a point where too late is too late, and this summer was an example of that. what are you guys gonna do? pretend something can still be done about it?
