A new post + vid for you, for the Klimakultur blog, on a WILD new survey that shows Norwegian society overestimates Equinor's renewable energy sales by an extremely massive amount It is a shocking demonstration of fossil fuel marketing prowess -->>> www.klimakultur.no/nyheter/equi...

Top tech company leaders are meeting with religious leaders to further their own business reasons and not to engage with questions of faith, says Father Paolo Benanti who has been an AI advisor to two popes

I liked Digger but in a weird way I still agree with basically most criticisms of it? Including Adam's here which are very thoughtful and well put together:

Damn reviewing things is exhausting. Being told you missed the point again and again when: (1) You are aware of "the point" (2) You think "the point" isn't very interesting (3) You think "the point" isn't very well made Anyway here's my review of Digger again www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJUX...

The numbers for potential climate harm from direct fossil-fuelled data centres are just phenomenal. It makes no sense to help them realise their dreams here

New from me: The US has faced a higher cost than any other country from the global Hormuz oil shock, with the crisis adding $160 billion to its fuel bill — or $471 per person on average — despite being the world’s largest oil producer.

I watched the box-office flop Digger last night and loved it. I was reminded that unless you’re rich/ powerful, our future will be satire about the new “norm” of climate disasters to laugh at so we don’t cry. And Australia is great source material with all the fossil fuel projects we approve.

"I wrote up a proposal for a moratorium on AI data centers in Lochbuie. The ensuing public meeting drew more attendees than I had ever seen. They overwhelmingly supported it, and it passed easily." Mayor Jamie Jeffery believes you can pass a data center moratorium:

I am blown away by how physically ugly smartwatches universally are now. The best looking ones are like one tiny fraction less bad than the worst-looking ones. There's no inventiveness, no thoughtfulness, nothing cool or compelling. Just ugly AF www.zdnet.com/health/googl...

Despite having one of the best EV policies in the world, we're still not on track to hit our transport climate targets

Augh, I meant to say "fossil energy" not "all energy" bsky.app/profile/keta...

40% of all energy use is Norway is for fossil fuel extraction + We are failing to build new power production even as data centre projections keep climbing up and up + On track to miss climate goals so we'll make up for it w/ EU offsets nyhetsbrev.energiogklima.no/p/r/eqFbf56y...

How much of the world’s proven coal, oil and gas (i.e. already found, pays to extract at today’s prices) can still be burned for a 66% chance of holding 2 °C? About 30%. The other 70%, 2,040 billion tonnes of CO₂, are stranded assets. Burn it all and CO₂ alone means roughly 2.7 °C Purple = added

Roose does a very nice job signaling in the second paragraph what sort of book this will be. He decided to write it the night after partying with ketamine-snorting effective accelerationists. He isn’t e/acc himself, but he hangs with that crowd and accepts their premises as newsworthy,

I am pretty relieved to see Australia's famously successful Clean Energy Finance Corporation stepping back from giving government backed loans to data centres, in light of the obscene, eye-watering amounts of private capital. I raised this in my recent blog post -> ketanjoshi.co/2026/08/14/p...

“Our involvement in this one is to drive them to acquire green energy and other ESG initiatives within the project. Otherwise, they simply would not do it" Is 100% true though. None of these companies are willing to take any real initiative

"We use a lot of fossil energy to extract fossil energy. It may sound strange. But Norway uses a lot of gas to extract and produce oil and gas"

This is wild to me: the US is actually very slightly more electrified than Denmark And China is slightly more electrified than Finland!

In fact the total share of city buses has a greater EV share here in Norway than electric passenger vehicles!

There was (still is?) a bunch of nonsense going around from the oil and gas industry guys behind doomberg, that Norway's oil consumption isn't falling. It's just a huge flat-out lie that they knowingly put out to protect their business interests (doomberg sucks so much)

By 2028, half of all distance driven in passenger cars in Norway will be electric, half will be fossil (most ppl think this is already 100% because EV-world focuses on 'cars sold' rather than 'distance driven' and I think that is misleading)

By 2031 we'll get somewhere between 8 to 13 new TWh of data centre demand. Makes a dent in total overall consumption, easily the fastest growth of any sector (including EV consumption)

The wildest one of these I got was a three PDF "press release" rollout from someone who said his ChatGPT sometimes got something wrong and that OpenAI didn't respond to his support ticket and fashioned himself as a kind of big tech whistleblower

this is happening because big tech customer support basically doesn't exist and desperate people are asking ChatGPT what to do. ChatGPT is sending them to journalists

In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story: www.404media.co/chatgpt-keep...

404media.coChatGPT Keeps Telling People 404 Media Can Solve Their Tech Support ProblemsBecause big tech doesn't do customer service, we are being inundated with AI-generated emails begging us for help.

as a long time fan of paris's work i absolutely loved HYPERSCALE, his new book, which really pulls together so many disparate threads of the data center convo—past, present, in the us and abroad—into a ripping narrative caught up with him about it for my latest power play newsletter!

wired.comWhat the US Movement Against Data Centers Can Learn From AbroadParis Marx, author of Hyperscale, has been tracking global data center development for years. The US has a lot to learn from what’s happened everywhere from Ireland to New Zealand.
