Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying

ISBNs in Canada are bulk purchased by Library and Archives Canada and distributed free to publishers (and self-publishers) who meet Canadian content requirements. Lying on the LAC form to get a free ISBN constitutes fraud (as people e.g. pretending to be Canadian have found out).

I'm sure it's *possible* to buy ISBNs privately here, and I imagine there are circumstances where it would make sense to do so, but I don't know what they would be.

You have to bear in mind that it is very much a concern of Canadians that our culture not be overwhelmed by the flood of cultural material from the US, and that therefore encouraging Canadian creators is something we really want our government to do. This is an aspect of that.
