The amount of people who I know who have a casual amount of magic cards for kitchen table play is quite a bit. I've seen players leave the game for a bit to come back for a set that suits their fancy. Magic can be an inexpensive hobby if you don't try to keep up with the Joneses.

I know we are all dunking on the NYT article for using Magic the Gathering as an example of a cheap hobby, but people forget that the majority of players who aren’t on Reddit actually only makes a few purchases a year and plays with what they have.

I don’t care how much money is spent on your deck, only how much of your heart and soul is in it. You can show up like this and be welcome at my table anytime:

I wish more people knew how cool #MagicTheGathering can be! @shoebox.gg is knocking. Have you thought about alter-art or proxy cards for your projects? @bbsheps.bsky.social made one of my favorite cube concepts. Uploaded the whole thing to @cubecobra.com! cubecobra.com/cube/overview/bbsheps

Now, I can see some people being cynical in regards to my active participation in the hobby and talking about it, but, to be blunt, I just like doing card analysis and players like my review threads. Still, there are times where taking a break is healthy for both mental and finances.

I’m telling you, my life got better when I quit trying to get all the Secret Lairs. Now, with some sets, I’ll just buy a bundle and singles. I did go overboard with Marvel Superheroes though.

I think it's dependent on whether or not you have an existent playgroup or have to find one. I've literally been told by an employee at an LGS "If you're not willing to spend $200 on a deck, don't come back." (I didn't.) And this was a decade ago. Can't imagine what it's like now.

For a long time it was a public positive of Magic that if you didn't like Standard or limited you could just bow out and they had to win you back. It's harder now in the modern content ecosystem but it's a better relationship with the game and spending.

Literally the point of Standard that if you don't like it now it'll be guaranteed to be totally different in a year and you can check in then.
