That's the sensible way to vote. Educate yourself and make the best choice for the country as a whole, not to appease your political party. Nobody should take an oath of blind loyalty to a political party.

In Canada I'm considered a Liberal but, I've voted Conservative, Socialist, even Green. Party affiliation is not as tribal as in America

I’m a very liberal Democrat. However I have occasionally voted for a Republican. This year and going forward I will never vote for a Republican!! Anyone who still considers themselves a Republican is dead to me. I believe in a 2 party system, Republican Party is too far gone.
