This might be one of the coolest things I've ever coded. I think I need more angles for the ship. But it's basically done. (Music from #DuckTales is placeholder. I just love that theme.) #playdate #gamedev #pixelart

I really want to make it so you can choose where to sail into the Mandelbrot set. I gotta figure out how to make sure you don't get lost in infinity where there's nothing, (vs make sure you get lost in infinity where there's everything 😉)

I had a friend at college who won a competition in the 80s to get some time on a supercomputer to plot part of the set. Unfortunately, he didn't realize that there's nothing much beyond x=1, and the first few runs just produced blank screens.

That's awesome! I wonder how this play date is going to handle the set. The resolution is only 400x240 so that's a plus, but that's still 96k points 😬 My grandfather did some Mandelbrot at work in the 80s-90s. I'm trying to get my hands on his old code but it might be lost to time 😔

Is that for emotional connection (I can understand that)? There are plenty of tutorials online on how to code a Mandelbrot set plotter. Do you only have two pixel colors? The colors of the set is normally generated from the number of iterations of the recursive equation at a given point.

Yeah it would just be cool to have his code. I'm taking a class on fractals right now, we're starting Mandelbrot this week. There's only 2 colors but there are dithering options, it'll be interesting to figure out for sure

Thanks!! I need to translate this into Lua but that's the fun of it

That's mostly true, though you can embed MicroPython over the C API. Christian Walther has an example: github.com/cwalther/pew... But it'd be very nice to produce MicroPython bindings to all the C APIs...in this way you could write MicroPython on the Playdate - and it should perform very well.
