if you think of "speed limit" as really an energy limit (mv^2) (and it is energy that kills, not speed), the equivalent to a 20mph ebike limit would be something like 3-5mph for a two-ton SUV.

You've got kids, who aren't anywhere near driving age, moving FASTER than traffic down sidewalks here Truly, ignorance is bliss, until they get splatted like a bug because nobody expects 30+ MPH stealth kids to appear from the sidewalk, you know, where people are usually at 3-5 mph

Ooh, a "rolling" speed limit depending on weight - now that's something smallish and sensible that could check growth of SUV sales perhaps? (thinking of Europe / Germany here).

@seancj.bsky.social I think fundamentally that's socially impossible. 100x the weight implies 1/10th the speed, and people simply aren't ready to accept that cars are 100x as dangerous as bikes.

Ah sorry, I meant applied only within the category of cars, essentially :P. (but in general seems to be the way to go long term to me, yeah! - with exceptions for emergency services of course)

Just had this conversation having been passed by a speeding Range Rover in a 30mph. The energy in the event of collision would be ridiculous. Tax and limit them into behaving reasonably.
