I emailed Patrick Healy, assistant managing editor for standards and trust at NYT, to ask why their story about a House report with new details of rape allegations against the President of the United States included neither those details, nor a single use of the word "rape." archive.is/1s9AM

Oh fuck :( . And of course entirely inevitable... 😔 . If this means journalists end up no longer having public facing email addresses, it'd be a *serious* loss. (I've gotten in contact with journalists that way in the past).

In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story: www.404media.co/chatgpt-keep...

The powerful executives who cozied up to Trump didn't oops accidentally forget about pendulum swings. They either: 1) Like the fascism 2) Calculated it was here to stay, so going along was savvy 3) Saw no real downside, no consequences when the pendulum swung Crucial to show them 3 was a mistake

That this is in THE WASHINGTON POST is almost too much irony to bear.

Very smart approach, and makes painfully clear that this is a dishonest movement.

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

@bioturbonick.net Hey, I've been following you a while, and I'm a bit surprised to see that you - seem to have thought it's a productive use of your, or anybody else's time to argue about the merits of genAI (with people you certainly know oppose its use due to its many downsides + its owners).

I agree with this in broad strokes, but the underlying connective tissue here is more of a character problem: this administration is simply bad at authoritarianism. Their policy judgment and execution has been ham-handed and incompetent because *they* are ham-handed and incompetent

Three moments broke Trump 2.0: 1) Kimmel and other attempted censorship after Charlie Kirk. Made public see the attack on speech. 2) Minnesota anti-ICE protests, Goode and Pretti killings. Made public see the attack on rights. 3) Iran war. Made public see bad foreign policy affects them directly.

Nice! That seems to be a winning angle, and while Impeachment would be justified on a whole plethora of fronts, this will certainly be the way things run the smoothest with the media, public opinion (and potentially Republican senators).

House Judiciary Democrats have just released a 50-page report that pulls together years of assault allegations against Trump and his reported connections to Jeffrey Epstein. The report calls for a special counsel to investigate Trump's ties to Epstein.

Something odd happens if you argue that the concept of machine is not well fit to describe living systems. Often, the response is not just that it's wrong: it's heretic (vitalism!). What this says is that the machine view of life is more a modern crypto-Christian belief than a scientific theory.

seancj.bsky.social reposted

There's no real argument behind the claim that we are machines. Some say it just means that we're made of matter. But the brain is not compared to a river or a mountain, it's compared to a hydraulic machine, a clock, a telegraph or a computer. To machines, not just material systems. Why?

seancj.bsky.social reposted

And of course it's a religious concept. A machine is something created by someone for some purpose, with a plan, using some knowledge. We have forgotten its religious origin, but all the conceptual scaffold is still here.

seancj.bsky.social reposted

Not everyone seems to realize that the origin of the machine view of life is not scientific at all. It dates from the 17th century (Descartes) and it's the expression of a monotheist view opposing pagan views of nature. A living being is like a perfect machine made by God, not an autonomous being.

Ukraine was winning the war, so Trump kneecapped Ukraine to help Russia. I wish it weren’t that simple, but it is. Our president is in bed with our enemies.

This is old but, at first reading I thought this was a quote from some dystopian media (maybe Half-Life 2), and the (first part of the) text overlayed to the image cause it somehow fitted style-wise. I mean, there were some things I found real strange when I visited DC about 20 years ago -

“Loitering is not permitted in this area. Please proceed to a designated location. Thank you for your cooperation,” a surveillance machine tells a small cluster of National Guard members as they patrol the fenced off Reflecting Pool in the rain.

- going through metal detectors to go in the mall for example (maybe that was a thing of the time, and had to do with it being the capital + it being closish to 9/11 still. dunno?). But this is really just straight out of dystopian sci-fi .

This is a great explainer, and hits the mark well, from what I can see / have heard. (I'm not in France, so can hardly really judge what's happening!)

The producer of a radio show I went on this morning said the host wanted to talk about Ilhan Omar, so I went back and listened to a bunch of the press coverage from last week to refresh my memory on the details. And I realized that the US media still doesn’t know how to talk about authoritarianism.

It's a bit trying at first, but kinda hit a somber point with me eventually. I don't live in the US, but sorry for that part of people's reality there...

I don't think most people are OK with that, either. There are many enduring problems with relying on consumers to regulate by voting with their dollars. They have inadequate information, they're intentionally misinformed, and a lot of company money comes from other places (e.g. investors, B2B).

Very well put, all of this !

Just trying to drink some coffee is a fraught ethical question. I don't want to drink coffee that's causing massive ecological damage, or is being picked by people who are dying of heat stroke, right? Yet, I can't tell you for sure if I'm succeeding at avoiding that.

But, I'm not saying we should throw our hands up about coffee. I'm saying that people care more than they're able to realistically act, in a lot of cases.

Here's the thing: if we're actually going to phase out fossil fuels and halt global heating, we will NEED executive agencies to display a pattern of "disparate treatment" against fossil fuels. BAAJA literally outlaws this.

Don't get me wrong: it's very bad that a centuries old town hall caught fire, but a society that thinks this is worth getting preoccupied about and doesn't seem to much care about people losing hands and eyes and life is a society that needs a serious rethink of priorities
