feeling disillusioned towards gamedev, especially since the universal modder thing. people say that humans/artists will still be valued in an era of ai-slop, but if there is any audience i trust the least, it is gamers. tired of seeing opinions of bitter, entitled, and anti-art people ₍˄·͈༝·͈˄₎

Is extensively modding games on the same level as making ai art though? As far as I understand ai was mostly used to help with decompiling, and after that modders had to do the rest themselves, or am I wrong?

the "universal-modder" is a particular tool that stitches different games together using their decomps. any of the videos you see of it (e.g. minecraft in elden ring) are almost entirely "vibe-coded" by throwing an AI at both codebases and asking it to make sense of it

Ah I see, I thought it was just the decompiling :/ I so often wish we could just go back to a world where ai doesn't exist at all

to add to this discussion, it's usually not "real" gameplay, and instead gameplay from one game pasted over the other. It's essentially like green screening batman out of arkham asylum and putting him on your screen in minecraft. bit fancier than that but still.

I feel like these have to be insane style over substance projects , like multiple people are talking about them but no one is playing them because the idea of playing Minecraft in elden ring isn't actually that novel

decades of conservative propaganda in gamer culture has made it the popular belief that the people making stuff are the true enemy.. finally with ai they can make what the gamers TRULY want (mario 64 in elden ring + jiggle physics)

Yeah,, when I was in middle school I thought picking a creative field was the best safeguard because it could never truly be automated. And I was right, but what I didn’t account for was people Not Caring at all…

I know this is about the other AI projects, but I remember looking lucid blocks mods, and basically everything was "yeah i used AI to make this cuz I don't know how to make mods :)"

I have never seen AI create a compelling game. AI does not have good ideas nor do most AI devs. You cannot look me in the eye and say “AI could have made lucid blocks” the idea is not something AI would have thought up. People who value their time on this earth will not play the slop

🍀 Same here. Despite this disillusionment... I refuse to give up on game development. Like a mad artist, I love it too much to even entertain the idea. Gamers weren't my audience to begin with. *I* am my audience first, my friends and family second, and those who like what we're doing third.

It's very discouraging, though even in a dystopian world where ai games become the norm, I imagine there will always be a huge underground community for the real stuff. That is if we don't all explode...

not too long ago i had this whole crisis and just decided i'd do this for myself and my real ones. the mainstream is too dumb and artless to care for me to care what they think. underground art is bravest form of resistance there is because they WANT it to stop. and also i just like it so why not

if this is the direction the world's going, like, have fun bro!! i'm staying behind!! peer pressure is another form of impostor syndrome, they are no better than us
