On September 11, 2001, countless heroes answered the call to help—and among them were brave search-and-rescue dogs who worked tirelessly through unimaginable conditions. Today, we honor these remarkable four-legged heroes and the important role they played during one of America’s darkest days.

Canadians, Trakr & his handler James Symington, drove from Nova Scotia to NYC. Trakr found the last survivor in the rubble. Canadian company, Muttuks donated about 1,000 pairs of protective booties for the search & rescue pups. I just came here to give a shout out to our dear neighbors & friends.❤️

These dogs were sent into dangerous places where they could have been killed by more falling debris, sliced open paws from glass. Inhaled toxic chemicals and exposed to rotting human remains. They didn't sign up for any of it.

Me too. But this was in reference to the dog heroes being appreciated. Dogs have so many different abilities and help so many on a day to day basis. They don’t ask for much in return except love and respect. We don’t deserve them.

More than 300 specially trained dogs joined rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero. Sadly, few people were found. Not finding survivors the dogs became visibly discouraged. Handlers hid rescuer workers in the debris, giving the dogs someone to actually find. ❤️ I got to meet some of these dogs.

I also remember the cadaver dogs were affected by the dead of the fall of the twin towers. Cadaver dogs are trained to find deceased bodies. The smell of death was everywhere, they couldn't find any bodies. They had to take the dogs out of the area.

You really know how to make a girl cry 😉 After watching several broadcast and reading again the reports, bringing instantly the feeling of that particular day and week. With more details, news, individual stories of loss and heartbreak. This clip in honor of the 4 legged rescue companions broke me.

Sometimes I wonder whether humanity deserves dogs. They offer unconditional loyalty, forgiveness without accounting, and love without asking what we can give in return. Perhaps dogs aren’t merely our best friends-they’re a moral indictment of how poorly we sometimes treat the world that loves us. ☮️🇺🇸

Dogs are remarkable among animals for how finely attuned they are to human emotional states, having evolved alongside us to read our faces, voices, body language, and even changes in scent. ☮️
